McKeesport

The town of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, an industrial community in the 1950’s is located where the Youghiogheny River flows into the Mongehela River. McKeesport was an important transportation center. Rail (since 1883) and barge traffic supplied the raw materials for the steel industry and carried away the finished products. The lengthy series of railroad bridge spans over the Youghiogheny River would have been used by the P&LE railroad at this time.
In addition, the B&O railroad had tracks which passed through the center of the city. Often, Passenger cars, trolleys, and even an occasional parade would need to stop until the train passed by. This traffic problem was later eliminated (in 1970) when the B&O abandoned this original railway and switched to the old P&LE railway, which was along Fourth Street, near the western edge of town. This railway is presently used by Amtrak and CSX trains to travel between Pittsburgh and Cumberland Maryland.
