Connellsville

Connellsville, PA sits astride the beautiful Youghiogheny River, about sixty rail miles southeast of Pittsburgh. This small to medium sized city is located in Fayette County, at the very heart of western Pennsylvania's coal and coke producing region. Scores of bituminous coal mines and thousands of bee-hive coke ovens dot the countryside. Excellent rail transportation in the area is provided mainly by the Baltimore & Ohio and Mon-Valley System (WM, P&LE and P&WV) railroads and, to a lesser extent, by the Pennsylvania Railroad.  Connellsville is a major operating center of the famous West Penn Railway System, whose interurban and trolley lines blanket the region. The West Penn links Connellsville to Uniontown, Greensburg, McKeesport and, via trackage rights over the Pittsburgh Railways Company, directly with the Steel City itself. Connellsville plays host to the West Penn's major shop complex where the line's many interurban and trolley cars are repaired or rebuilt.
